Best friends Wendy and Zachary decide to form a club to help people, calling it Angels Inc. They resolve to do a good deed every Saturday, after they go to Granville Island for ice cream, that is!
First they paint their neighbour’s shed. Were the rainbow colours a good idea? Then looking after Mrs. Haddock’s little dog, Pooky, outside the market turns into quite an experience. Now they decide to mow Mrs. Creech’s lawn, which hasn’t been cut all season. As they drag Zach’s dad’s new lawn-mower towards the yard, they notice a truck pull up the house and the same suspicious couple, that they noticed a week ago by the garage, get out. Quickly they decide to warn Mrs. Creech, saying these people are thieves, but she is not convinced, calling them meddling and interfering kids. Can they save Mrs. Creech’s valuables and prove their good intentions?
This delightful story is well written, full of adventure and humour that should appeal to the beginning chapter book reader. The appropriate dialogue keeps the story light and amusing. Young readers will also relate to Kim La Fave’s Whimsical, black and white illustrations, which add to the frivolity.
This short volume should prove to be a popular addition to an elementary school library or classroom collection.
